Frequently asked questions

How many animals are rehomed because pets are not allowed at home?

On Miwuki we do not know it for every case, but we do know what private individuals explain. In 2025, 14.1% of those who explained in their own words why they were looking for a new home for their animal mentioned a home where pets are not allowed, and 21.2% moving house; in total, 26.5% mentioned housing. From the list of reasons, 5.2% chose “pets not allowed at home”.

Why do the list of reasons and the written reason not match?

Only one option can be chosen from the list, and a home that does not allow pets may end up as “change of address” or “lack of time or space”. In the free text, by contrast, a single reason can mention several topics.

Has it increased over the years?

On the list, “pets not allowed at home” rose from 2.8% of cases from private individuals in 2019 to 5.2% in 2025, and change of address from 13.0% to 18.7%. The platform changed in June 2023, so the comparison between years is only indicative.

Does it happen more with dogs or with cats?

In 2025, housing appeared in 28.2% of written reasons about dogs and in 22.0% of those about cats.

Does the dog's size make a difference?

In 2025, housing appeared in 32.8% of written reasons about large dogs and in 24.3% of those about small dogs, but the difference changes from one year to the next. It does not show that size makes a difference.

Does this measure abandonment because of housing?

No. It is the reason stated by people looking for a new home for their animal on Miwuki. We do not know how many people give up adopting because of housing or how many animals are abandoned because of it, and it does not describe the whole of Spain.

How do I cite these data?

Miwuki. Miwuki Report on Pet Adoption in Spain. Housing and pets (data version 2026.10.22-r1; data cut-off 22 October 2026).

How is it measured?

  • The list. Since December 2018, private individuals choose a reason from a closed list when listing. They can choose only one.
  • The written reason. Since June 2023, they also explain it in their own words. Texts are classified into topics with a word dictionary and are never published. In a blind-reviewed control sample, more than nine out of ten topics detected were correct and around four out of five of those present were detected.
  • Housing groups the written reasons that mention a home where pets are not allowed or moving house; each reason counts once.
  • Limits. It is the reason stated by the publisher. It only describes the private individuals who list on Miwuki, not shelters or the whole of Spain, and it does not measure how many people give up adopting because of housing or how many animals are abandoned because of it.
